Rymers Sweeps Streets at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (May 26, 2001) - Butch Rymers made a clean sweep of the street stock class at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night, winning his heat, the trophy dash and the feature. Chad Cavett claimed his first USA sprint car win of the year, as did Jeff McGibboney in the late models. Rowdy Starnes survived to win a challenging USA modified main.Rymers was on the outside of the second row as 18 street stocks took the green flag in their 12-lap A main. Flying around the outside, he put the Shipp Rebuilders / Salomon Grey financial Nr. 22 out front before the first lap was completed. He slipped past Johnny Points on the last lap of their heat, and led every lap of the trophy dash. That set Rymers up to win the Parks Auto Sales Sweep Bonus, if he could only win the street stock main. Four caution flags slowed the street stock feature, putting the fastest drivers in the class right on Rymers’ rear bumper for the restarts, but each time he pulled away to maintain the lead. In the final laps he pulled away to take the checkered flag with almost a half straight-away lead. Tim McManus pulled past Trandel White on the final lap for second, followed in fourth by Frank Shafer and Johnny Points. Pat Wall won the other heat race. High humidity, bright sunshine in the afternoon and a few sprinkles in the third heat race made for an interesting evening for the USA sprint cars. The track held a lot of horsepower until late in the feature. Cavett set the pace to lead every lap of his heat race in the Soulman’s Bar-B-Que / Infinity Security Systems Nr. 9C. Jeff Liles and Justin Zimmerman won the other heats. The inverted points average lineup put Cavett on the outside of the second row as the 20-lap feature got started. Rodney Brown set the early pace until Cavett went low on the exit of turn two to take the lead on the fourth lap. The race slowed on the ninth lap when Dan Burk got turned around in turn two. The caution gave Cavett a clear track as he pulled away under the green flag. Four laps later the red flag flew when Eric Payne tried to dive deep into turn one and slide up in front of Keith Walker in the battle for second. Payne clipped Walker’s front tire, sending Walker flipping off turn two. He walked away from the damaged car. When the race resumed, Cavett again pulled away to take his first win at Devil’s Bowl this year. Jeff Liles had a strong run late in the race to take second, followed by Rowdy Hull, Larry Long up from starting 16th to finish fourth and Jerry Pinckard fifth. Brian Harvill walked away from a hard flip on the first lap of the third sprint car heat race. McGibboney has his best run this season to put the McGibboney Chassis / Baber’s Garage Nr. 19 on his way to victory in the 15-lap late model main. Mike Jones and Britt Ables won the heat races, but his low point average this season put McGibboney on the pole for the feature. Jones lost a lot of fluid in turn four on the opening lap, sending several cars spinning, including Skip O’Neal. When the race resumed, Harry Hronas grabbed the top spot. Two other cautions slowed the early part of the race, with McGibboney in a tight battle for second with several other cars. On a tenth lap restart, McGibboney pulled past the battling cars and got under Hronas in the second turn for the lead. His only challenge the rest of the race was the lapped cars of Jones and Darren Ellis. Both lost laps in the pits early in the race, and through they ran with the leaders, they were not in contention. McGibboney took the checkered flag ten car lengths ahead of second place Jimmy Quick, Jr., with O’Neal climbing back to third. Ables and Hronas were fourth and fifth. Starnes was inside the ninth row as the 24 USA modifieds took the green flag in their 15-lap feature. Gary Lowe took the early lead in a race that would be slowed by six caution flags. Starnes avoided the early cautions and went around the outside in the Millen Oil / Mike Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X. That put him fifth on a restart on the fifth lap, and he charged past Lowe on the next lap. Jody Mayne pulled up to challenge Starnes, briefly leading the ninth lap, but Starnes was too fast, retaking the lead and pulling away. Mayne held on for second, and won the TimberWolf Hard Charger award, coming from 21st on the start after winning the B main. Points leader Tom Lorenz finished third, followed by Randy Kirkland and Richard McGibboney. Starnes, Dale Wester, Rick Preddy and Ronnie Welborn won the heat races. Aaron Booze was okay after flipping his #10B in the modified B main.
