Young Tops Sprints in Wild Feature at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (July 7, 2001) - Greg Young grabbed the win in a crash filled USA sprint car A feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. Rowdy Starnes also claimed a controversial win. Jeff McGibboney topped his second late model main of the season. Chuck Hall made it two straight street stock wins.Young was outside the sixth row as the green flag fell on the 20-lap USA sprint car main. Moments later the race’s first caution flew for Chad Cavett. When the race resumed, Jimmy Goodwin pulled out front to pace the opening lap with Dan Burk pulling into the lead on the next trip around the half-mile clay oval. A lap later Cavett was involved in a more serious crash sending his car back to the trailer. Burk led the cars to the green flag with the first red flag of the race coming out on the sixth lap when Bob Ewell got upside down off the top of turn three. After a quick caution on the restart, Glen Stubblefield, Jr. took the lead from Burk. The yellow flew a lap later when Keith Walker got turned around. Brandon Erwin, who had been battling Burk for second, got turned, and in the jam up behind him Matt Clevenger, Brian Harvill and Paul White were collected. Young avoided all this early trouble, including a lap 14 spin by Ken Howery to take second place on lap 15. Skip Wilson took the runner spot on the next lap, but Young came back to take the position a lap later. The red flag flew the final time on the 18th lap when Brandon Erwin got upside down. That put Young right on Stubblefield’s rear bumper for the restart. Young got a good run in the Mack’s Auto Service / VFR Inc. Nr. 9 and stayed with Stubblefield. Young had the advantage of being able to pick a different line and used it on the final lap to pull ahead of Stubblefield for the win as they came to the checkered flag. Wilson held third to the finish, followed by Goodwin and Jeff Liles. Goodwin, Burk and Paul White won the heats. Charles Lasater paced the opening laps of the USA modified 15-lapper. Jeff Welborn took over the lead on the third lap. The USA modifieds always race three and four wide during the early laps of the feature and Saturday was no exception. Starnes was trying to get past Ronnie Welborn for second when they made contact. That caused Welborn to bounce off the front straight wall. As his car came back across the track it collected Rick McCommas, flipping McCommas. Jody Mayne also crashed into the upside down car. With the track blocked, and the other cars stopped in turn four, a spirited discussion of the incident broke out. Order was shortly restored and Jeff Welborn led the cars under the green flag. Starnes quickly took the lead in the Starnes Trucking/ Mike Cain’s Racing Engines Nr. 50X. In the run to the finish, Dale Wester moved up to second by the time the checkered flag fell. Bobby Ruffin, Randy Kirkland and Tom Lorenz rounded out the top five. Lorenz, Ronnie Welborn and Ruffin won the heat races. McGibboney tried to get past polesitter Kevin Boling as the late models took the green flag, but had to wait until the second lap to make the pass. Once he put the McGibboney Chassis / Baber’s Garage Nr. 19 out front, McGibboney pulled away to a small lead before the first caution of the race flew on lap five. Second running Boling went around, and dropped out. Keith Darrow moved up to second and began to challenge McGibboney after the restart. Two laps later Christopher Drewery and Ron Lane tangled to bring out the yellow. When the race resumed, McGibboney held the top spot with Darrow right behind. Points leader Ronnie Long moved up and took over the second spot from Darrow on the 12th lap. Long battled side by side with McGibboney as they raced to the checkered flag with McGibboney claiming his second win of the season. Darrow was third, followed by Mike Jones and Brad Zimmerman. Jones, Darrow and Darren Ellis won the heat races. The street stock 12-lap feature involved several lead changes before finding the checkered flag. Johnny Points set the early pace, with Thomas Weeks and Butch Rymers trading the lead four times. Hall took the lead in the Speed Pro Signs Nr. 7 on the 11th lap. In a close battle to the finish line, Hall edged ahead to take his second straight win. Third behind Rymers was Frank Shafer, with Mike Walls fourth and Tim McManus fifth. Walls, Hall and Rymers won the heat races.
