Fifth Wins for Ramey and Starnes at Devil's Bowl Mesquite, TX (August 11, 2001) - Kevin Ramey charged to the front of the USA sprint car field to win his fifth A main of the season at Devil’s Bowl Speedway Saturday night. Rowdy Starnes had a harder time in the USA modified main, but he also captured his fifth win. Jeff Jones claimed his third late model win and Chuck Hall took his third street stock victory, his second in a row. A short rain shower just before the races started upset the plans of several drivers. After weeks of a dry track in very hot weather, the drivers had to contend with a tacky heavy track all night.Ramey started the Burkham Construction Nr. 7M on the outside of the fifth row as Keith Walker took off from the pole to grab the early lead. An early spin by Rawdy Hull also collected Matt Clevenger. Walker pulled away on the restart, but the tight racing behind him resulted in the next yellow. Sixth running Jerry Pinckard went around on the front straight, and Greg Young could not avoid him. Young did a slow rollover, but the car was done for the night. Ramey was up to third by flying around the outside. On the restart he took second. Walker charged ahead with a comfortable lead until he caught lapped traffic. Ramey quickly caught Walker and took the lead on the 11th lap by diving to the bottom of turns three and four. A caution on the 16th lap cost Brandon Erwin, who had climbed from 13th to fifth. When a lapped car did not come up to speed, Erwin was up to speed and passed a couple cars to avoid a crash. Jumping the restart sent him to the back of the field. Ramey charged ahead as the green fell again and easily claimed the victory. Walker held second with points leader Skip Wilson taking third. Brian Harvill and George White rounded out the top five. Walker and White won the heats. Erwin and Clevenger came back to finish eighth and ninth respectively. Nine cautions slowed the USA modified main. Four cautions in the first three laps sent several of the drivers in the top ten in points to the pits with broken race cars. Charles Lasater drove his best race of the season, taking the lead from the outside pole and holding off all challengers until the 14th lap. Starnes was good, and a little lucky moving from 14th at the start to third by the fourth lap. He took second place a fifth lap restart. The inside line on the restarts was not the place to be for Starnes in the Starnes Trucking / Mike Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X. Lasater pulled ahead on every restart. Richard McGibboney even took second for a lap late in the race. The ninth caution of the race setup a two lap dash to the checkered flag. Lasater slipped high in the fourth turn as the white flag flew, letting Starnes claim the lead and victory. Lasater was second at the checkered flag, followed by Dale Wester, Randy Kirkland and Ronnie Welborn. Kirkland earned the TimberWolf Hard Charger Award. After winning the B main he started 21st in the A and passed 17 cars on his way to finishing fourth. Lasater, Welborn, Jay Miller and Clyde Dunn, Jr. won the heat races. There were four lead changes in a competitive late model main. Britt Ables led the opening lap, but after contact with the second place car of Brad Zimmerman, he went off the track. Stephen Manning took over the lead, but Keith Darrow charged to the front on the next lap. Jones in the First State Bank of Mesquite Nr. 7J was up to third, but had to watch a close battle between Darrow and Manning. Manning regained the lead on the 10th lap, and Jones moved up to second. As the white flag flew, Jones went deep into the first turn, braked late and slammed into the lead. Manning dropped out after the contact. Jones went on to win the feature, with Darren Ellis taking second. Darrow was third, with Richard McGibboney and Jimmy Quick, Jr. fourth and fifth. Ables and Zimmerman won the heats. Polesitter Walter Dorsett was fast and smooth as he pulled away at the start of the street stock feature. Chuck Hall came through a tight pack to take fourth on the third lap and second on the fifth lap. A caution on the sixth lap erased Dorsett’s lead. Hall went to the inside of turn two on the restart and claimed the lead. Points leader Thomas Weeks slipped past Dorsett on the ninth lap, but could not catch the Speed Pro Signs Nr. 7 of Hall. Taking the checkered flag first for the second straight week, Hall celebrated his third win this year. Weeks was second, with Dorsett third. Pat Walls and Tim McManus were fourth and fifth. Dorsett, Frank Shafer and Weeks won their heat races.
