Ramey Takes Points Lead With Devil’s Bowl Victory Mesquite, TX (June 1, 2002) - Kevin Ramey topped the USA sprint car feature Saturday night at Devil’s Bowl Speedway, and claimed the points lead with the victory. Travis Pace topped the street stocks for the first time this year. Rowdy Starnes raced three wide before taking the lead and win in the USA modified main. Cheyney Hopkins took his first Devil’s Bowl late model win in several years.Ramey had to chase down early leader Charlie Brown’s Koin Kar Wash / City Blues Nr. 72 in the caution free 20-lap USA sprint car feature. Brown led every lap of his heat race. Skip Wilson topped the other heat in the Bubba’s Plumbing / Texas Rebuilders Nr. 65. Brown’s point average put him on the outside of the front row for the feature. Ramey had trouble in his heat race, but started on the outside of the fifth row. At the drop of the green flag, Brown took off. Wilson moved quickly into second. Brown held a small lead until halfway through the race when he caught the lapped car of Phil Valvra. Brown was running just a little faster than Valvra, who had jumped the cushion earlier. The two cars were running the same line and Brown could not find a way past Valvra. Wilson caught Brown and battled for the lead. Ramey had moved into third on the seventh lap. He caught Brown and Wilson on the 10th lap. Ramey took the Burkham Construction / Eagle Chassis Nr. 7M low in turn four and pulled ahead of Wilson as the 12th lap ended. Staying in the low line, Ramey took the lead in turn one, pulled past Valvra and took the lead. Ramey continued to pull away and took the checkered flag without any further competition. Wilson was second with Glen Stubblefield, Jr. third. Greg Young and Marvin Lough were fourth and fifth. Brown had problems with his rear end gears and finished sixth. Cheyney Hopkins has won many late model features in the D-FW area over the years. He has not raced his own car for several years, and only occasionally raced other cars. This season, Hopkins is sharing driving duties in the Harry Hronas owned Nr. 22 late model sponsored by Redline Raceway and The Stan Hopkins Company. Saturday he was strong in his heat and the trophy dash, running second to Jimmy Goodwin in the Gatlin Motors / Tony’s D&D Auto Parts Nr. 12 in both races. Late model points leader Steve Trevathan in the Nr. 21 won the other heat race. Hopkins started on the outside of the front row for the 15-lap feature. J.D. Wilson in the Nr. V8 took the lead on the start, but Hopkins came back on the second lap to take the top spot. Hopkins soon had a 10 car length lead. Catching lapped traffic on the eighth lap, Hopkins easily moved past the slower cars and added to his lead. Goodwn tried to catch Hopkins but could not cut down the leader’s margin. Late in the race Trevathan got past Goodwin to take second. Fourth was Ronnie Long with Skip O’Neal taking fifth. George Howard surprised a lot of people Saturday night with his best run at Devil’s Bowl. In his heat race, he was flawless in the Nr. 68, leading every lap for his first heat race win. When the green flag dropped on the 15-lap USA modified feature, Howard pulled into the lead and pulled away from a very contentious battle for second. Howard was running a good race as Randy Kirkland and Rowdy Starnes broke free of the pack and closed up on the leader. They were running three wide down the front straight with Starnes ahead by inches at the end of the fifth lap when Kirkland and Howard made contact. Kirkland spun quickly while Howard went off the top of turn one. Ronnie Welborn and Steve Sickels also had their cars damaged trying to avoid the crash forcing them out of the race. When the cars lined up for the restart, Starnes was out front in the Starnes Trucking / Cain’s Machine Shop Nr. 50X. Starnes, the two time defending champion, pulled away. Tom Lorenz took over second, but could not catch Starnes. Even a late race caution did not help Lorenz, who had to settle for second at the checkered flag. Clyde Dunn, Jr. came through a close battle for third, with Richard McGibboney fourth and Rick McCommas fifth. McGibboney won the B main in the Baber’s Garage / Outlaw Fabrication Nr. 19. He started the feature on the inside of the ninth row. By passing 13 cars on his way to finishing fourth, he won the Timber Wolf Racing Hard Charger Award for the second straight week. Dunn in the Smiley’s Racing Products / Young Chevrolet Nr. 88, Starnes and Kirkland in the Reliable Plumbing / Baber’s Garage Nr. 77 won the other heat races. The street stocks also had an action packed feature. Pat Walls in the Walls Racing Nr. 39, Jimmy Luker in the Jeanie’s Auto Parts / Kyle G’s Nr. 34 and Travis Pace in the Gary’s Machine Shop / Schramm’s Ammo & Weapons Nr. 17 won the three heat races. In the third heat, won by Pace, there were four different leaders in the first four laps. Walter Dorsett started on the outside of the front row when the 12-lap feature took the green flag with Brad Zimmerman on the pole. A four car crash on the front straight on the start brought the yellow out before the cars reached turn one. After getting lined up again, they took the green a second time. Zimmerman paced the first lap in the Half-Price Automotive Services / Lonestar Transmission Nr. 11X. Mike Meeks, Jr. in the Meeks Paint & Body / Gary’s Machine Shop Nr. 37 took the lead with a low run through turn two on the next trip around the half-mile clay oval. Dorsett did not let Meeks go and charged alongside. The pair raced side by side with Dorsett putting the R&D Racing / Nikon Dallas Nr. 31 out front the next time past the flag stand. The pair raced side by side for several laps. Meeks could pull ahead on the bottom in the turns, but Dorsett had the momentum off the turns to lead each lap. Thomas Weeks pushed his way through the pack to battle the leaders by the seventh lap. On the eighth lap Weeks slid his car into Meeks, forcing the Nr. 37 off the track and out of the race. However, Weeks damaged something on his car and dropped out a lap later after the restart. Dorsett stayed out front by had former champion Pace on his rear bumper. On the ninth lap as they raced through turn two, Dorsett’s car took a hard right turn off the top of the track. Pace took over the lead. Pace took the victory by two car lengths over Michael Murphy. Murphy’s second place finish and Trandel White’s damage in the opening lap crash put Murphy into the points lead for the first time in his career at Devil’s Bowl. Third at the checkered flag was Chuck Hall with Michael Grubbs, Jr. and Rick Wycough completing the top five.
