Mesquite, TX (July 3) – Jason Ingalls topped a
field of 32 SUPR late models with a masterful run in the 35-lap feature
on the famed Devil's Bowl half-mile Sunday night. David Gailley took the
street stock cash in a close finish. Troy Taylor did not let anyone get
close in his run to top the US modifieds.

at Devil's Bowl Sunday night. (Photo by Linda Fields) |
Jason Ingalls knows the best way to get around the
Devil's Bowl half-mile oval - without other cars in front of yours. That
was not an easy task after he drew in for the evening's races - and found
he would be starting on the fourth row for his heat race. With a passing
points system, coming from the back row can give a driver the feature
pole. It can also keep a driver mired at the back all evening if he
doesn't have a perfect heat race.
Ingalls did not waste time when the green flag fell
on that first heat. Quickly moving past half of the field, and climbing to
the place position. However, he could not get close to Ronnie Long and was
the second car under the checkered flag for the heat. Devil's Bowl regular
Long was unfamiliar with SUPR procedures and failed to report to the
scales after the heat.
That advanced Ingalls to the heat win, and earned him
enough passing points to start the 35-lap feature on the inside of the
front row. Ronny Adams also came from the back of his heat to earn the
outside front row starting spot.
When the green flag dropped on the 35-lap main event,
Ingalls put the Nash Trucking Nr. 12 into the lead, but had Adams and
defending Devil's Bowl late model champion Tom Lorenz right behind him.
As the leaders flew around the track, they quickly
caught the back of the 22 car field. Ingalls continued to hold the lead as
the top cars worked past lapped cars until the race's 28th lap.

Ronnie Long won the first SUPR heat - but did not
report to the scales. That put him on the back of the first B main -
which he won. Starting 17th in the feature - he climbed through the
field to claim a third place finish (Photo by Linda Fields) |
That's when Adams got together with a lapped car on
the front straight. The contact took out Adams, Lorenz and fifth running
Kenny Merchant. David Ashley managed to miss the spinning cars, and
advanced from fourth to second for the subsequent restart. The surprise
was Long, who had been forced to start last in the first B main, which he
won. That put him 17th on the starting grid for the feature, and Long had
moved up to sixth in his Town East Ford / Speed Specialties Nr. 28L. Long
was third on the restart order.
Ingalls had what he wanted - a clear track and no
trouble on his way to the checkered flag - his first victory at Devil's
Bowl, with Ashley second in the Thornhill Wrecker / Wyatt's Collision Nr.
14. Long took third with Allen Tippen and Jeff Chanler fourth and fifth.
Along with Ingalls and Adams, Lorenz in the Smiley's Racing Nr. 84 and
Tippen won the heat races, with Long and Skip O'Neal in the Urban Fire
Protection Nr. 8 winning the twin B mains.

David Gailley took the street stock feature win by a
fender over Trandel White. (Photo by Linda
Fields) |
Close barely describes the street stock feature
Sunday night. Heat winners Trandel White and Mark Ross started on the
front row, but after a three and four car wide battle in the opening lap
it was Johnny Philpot out front in the J&S Direct Doors / M&M
Maching Nr. 12. For four laps White stayed close, but on the sixth
circuit, Danny Zimmerman in the Quality Intermodal Delivery Service Nr.
11X and David Gailley in the Gailley Motorsports Nr. 24 pulled past White,
along with Terry Carter in the Nr. 35.
A lap later Gailley was second and on the next trip
around the track, Philpot slowed and pulled out. Also in the top five was
Jason Trevathan, who also pulled aside after eight laps. Two laps later
Zimmerman slowed.
White had avoided those woes and took the runnerup
position on the tenth lap. The track was coming to White, but Gailley was
also running a perfect line. On the final lap, White got a good run coming
out of turn two and diving into turn three. Pulling hard out of turn four,
he came up a fender short as Gailley was perfect to the checkered flag.
Walter Beaty ran a strong third in the Evans Grinding Nr. 75 with Frank
Shafer fourth in the Performance Auto Supply Nr. 84. Carter rounded out
the top five with heat winner Ross taking the sixth spot in his Ross
Racing / Tommy G's Welding Nr. 8.

Troy Taylor was fast from the start of the evening
and wasted no time in pulling away to take the USA modified feature
win. (Photo by
Linda Fields) |
Someone else who knows the fast way around the
Devil's Bowl oval is Troy Taylor. The driver of the Batson Construction /
Tru-Color Refinishing Nr. 56 has topped many races on the track over his
25 years of racing. Though he doesn't race Devil's Bowl on a weekly basis
in recent seasons, Taylor is always fast when he does make the trip to
Mesquite.
Taylor started the 15-lap feature alongside
polesitter Clyde Dunn, Jr. in the Smiley's Racing Nr. 88. But when the
green flag dropped the race was all Taylor. He quickly pulled into the
lead down the front straight and was solidly ahead entering the first
turn.
Taylor hit the setup perfectly as the race ran flag
to flag without the yellow. Dunn surrendered the second spot to his cousin
Johnny Dunn, Jr. at the halfway point and fell back to fourth when Bobby
Ruffin took third with four laps to go in the race.
Johnny Dunn suffered a flat right rear tire just
before the white flag, with his Smiley's/ Speed Specialties Nr. 99,
falling back to finish eighth.
Ruffin as fast in the Hoosier Tire Southwest / Ross
Railroad Consulting Nr. 121 in the final laps, narrowing Taylor's lead,
but he had to settle for second at the checkered flag. Clyde Dunn, Jr. was
third with Brian Sugg in the Sugg Plumbing / Uniflex Machine Nr. 8X in
fourth and Rowdy Starnes in the Starnes Trucking / Cain's Engine Repair
Nr. 50X taking fifth. Along with Taylor and Clyde Dunn, Starnes and Randy
Kirkland in the Reliable Plumbing / American Locksmith Nr. 77 won the USA
modified heats. Richard Miller in the Jeanie's Used Auto Parts / Rick
Shipp Rebuilders Nr. 1$ and Richard McGibboney in the Outlaw Fabrication/
Baber's Garage Nr. 19 won the B mains.
